Il treno partì da Madrid alle sei del mattino. Metà dei posti erano vuoti. Elena scelse un posto vicino al finestrino e guardò la città lasciare il posto a campi secchi e aperti.
Una donna si sedette di fronte a lei. Era anziana — forse sessant'anni, forse di più — e portava una piccola borsa con un panino avvolto in carta stagnola. Presto le squillò il telefono. Rispose a bassa voce, ma anche il treno era molto silenzioso.
«No, non gliel'ho ancora detto», sussurrò la donna. «Lo farò, ma non oggi. Oggi voglio solo vederla.» Una pausa. «Lei non sa che sono malata. Per favore, nemmeno tu glielo dire.»
Elena guardò fuori dal finestrino e finse di non sentire. Ma non riusciva a smettere di ascoltare. La donna parlò ancora qualche minuto, riattaccò e mangiò il panino lentamente.
Quando il treno arrivò a Granada, la donna si alzò e guardò Elena. «Vado a trovare mia nipote», disse, come se stesse spiegando qualcosa che Elena avesse già chiesto. «È un anno che non la vedo. Buon viaggio.»
Elena la guardò camminare lungo il binario e sparire tra la gente.
