Vor langer Zeit machten Händler eine sehr weite Reise durch Asien. Diese alte Route nennt man die Seidenstraße. Sie führte von China bis nach Europa, über hohe Berge und trockene Wüsten. Die ganze Straße war mehr als sechstausend Kilometer lang.
Kaufleute transportierten Seide aus China auf dem Rücken von Kamelen und Pferden. Sie verkauften auch Tee, Gewürze und schöne Edelsteine. Auf dem Rückweg brachten sie Glas, Pferde und Gold nach China. Die Reise war langsam und anstrengend und konnte viele Monate dauern.
Auf der Seidenstraße reisten nicht nur Waren. Auch Ideen, Kunst und neue Wörter wanderten zwischen Ost und West hin und her. Die Menschen in Rom liebten Seide, aber sie wussten nicht, wie sie hergestellt wurde. Manche dachten sogar, dass Seide wie Blätter auf Bäumen wächst.
