Los comerciantes llevaban seda desde China sobre el lomo de camellos y caballos. También vendían té, especias y piedras hermosas. En el viaje de regreso, traían vidrio, caballos y oro a China. El viaje era lento y difícil, y podía durar muchos meses.
El Camino de la Seda movía más que productos. También movía ideas, arte y palabras nuevas entre el este y el oeste. La gente en Roma amaba la seda, pero no sabía cómo se hacía. Algunos incluso pensaban que la seda crecía en los árboles como hojas.
