Tanto tempo fa, i mercanti facevano un viaggio molto lungo attraverso l'Asia. Le persone chiamano questa vecchia strada la Via della Seta. Andava dalla Cina fino in Europa, tra montagne alte e deserti secchi. Tutta la strada era lunga più di seimila chilometri.
I mercanti portavano la seta dalla Cina sulla schiena di cammelli e cavalli. Vendevano anche tè, spezie e belle pietre. Al ritorno, portavano vetro, cavalli e oro in Cina. Il viaggio era lento e difficile, e poteva durare molti mesi.
La Via della Seta portava più delle merci. Portava anche idee, arte e nuove parole tra Oriente e Occidente. A Roma la gente amava la seta, ma non sapeva come si faceva. Alcuni pensavano che la seta crescesse sugli alberi, come le foglie.
