Купцы везли шелк из Китая на спинах верблюдов и лошадей. Они также продавали чай, специи и красивые камни. На обратном пути они привозили в Китай стекло, лошадей и золото. Путь был медленным и трудным и мог занимать много месяцев.
Шелковый путь переносил не только товары. Он также переносил идеи, искусство и новые слова между Востоком и Западом. В Риме люди любили шелк, но не знали, как его делают. Некоторые даже думали, что шелк растет на деревьях, как листья.
