Leaving the Valley

Tomas the ranger came to the visitor centre at sunrise. He had a Thermos of coffee. He sat on a bench next to Polly.

Tomas, o guarda florestal, chegou ao centro de visitantes ao amanhecer. Ele tinha uma garrafa térmica de café. Sentou-se em um banco ao lado de Polly.

They did not say much. Polly preened her feathers. The morning smelled of the river.

Eles não falaram muito. Polly alisava suas penas. A manhã tinha o cheiro do rio.

"You are leaving," Tomas said.

"Você está indo embora," disse Tomas.

Polly tilted her head.

Polly inclinou a cabeça.

He told her about the rest of the park. The high country with its lakes. Another valley to the north. A grove of tall trees.

Ele contou a ela sobre o resto do parque. As terras altas com seus lagos. Outro vale ao norte. Um bosque de árvores altas.

"This place is too big to see in three days," he said. "You only see pieces."

"Este lugar é grande demais para ver em três dias," ele disse. "Você só vê partes."

Polly thought about her dives off the cliff. None of them were good. But each one was a little better. She could keep getting better for a lifetime.

Polly pensou sobre seus mergulhos do penhasco. Nenhum deles foi bom. Mas cada um foi um pouco melhor. Ela poderia continuar melhorando por toda a vida.

The green shuttle bus came back. The same driver. Tomas stood up. "Off you go," he said.

O ônibus verde voltou. O mesmo motorista. Tomas levantou-se. "Lá vai você," ele disse.

Polly stretched her wings. She lifted off the bench. She circled the visitor centre. She climbed.

Polly esticou suas asas. Ela levantou-se do banco. Ela circulou o centro de visitantes. Ela subiu.

The valley dropped away. El Capitan was on her left. Half Dome was on her right.

O vale ficou para trás. El Capitan estava à sua esquerda. Half Dome estava à sua direita.

At the rim, she banked west. Below her, a peregrine hunted small swifts along the cliff. Polly watched. Then she found the wind and let it carry her out of the park.

Na borda, ela virou para o oeste. Abaixo dela, um falcão-peregrino caçava andorinhas ao longo do penhasco. Polly observou. Então ela encontrou o vento e deixou que ele a levasse para fora do parque.
