Leaving the Valley

Tomas the ranger came to the visitor centre at sunrise. He had a Thermos of coffee. He sat on a bench next to Polly.

레인저 토마스는 해가 뜰 무렵 방문자 센터에 도착했다. 그는 커피가 담긴 보온병을 가지고 있었다. 그는 폴리 옆 벤치에 앉았다.

They did not say much. Polly preened her feathers. The morning smelled of the river.

둘은 많은 말을 하지 않았다. 폴리는 깃털을 다듬었다. 아침 공기에는 강 냄새가 났다.

"You are leaving," Tomas said.

"떠나려는 거야?" 토마스가 말했다.

Polly tilted her head.

폴리는 고개를 갸우뚱했다.

He told her about the rest of the park. The high country with its lakes. Another valley to the north. A grove of tall trees.

그는 공원의 나머지 부분에 대해 이야기했다. 호수가 있는 높은 산악 지대. 북쪽에 있는 또 다른 계곡. 키 큰 나무들이 있는 숲.

"This place is too big to see in three days," he said. "You only see pieces."

"이곳은 3일 만에 다 볼 수 없을 만큼 넓어," 그가 말했다. "조각조각만 볼 수 있을 뿐이야."

Polly thought about her dives off the cliff. None of them were good. But each one was a little better. She could keep getting better for a lifetime.

폴리는 절벽에서 뛰어내린 것을 생각했다. 그 중 어느 것도 완벽하지 않았다. 하지만 각각 조금씩 나아졌다. 평생 동안 계속 나아질 수 있었다.

The green shuttle bus came back. The same driver. Tomas stood up. "Off you go," he said.

초록색 셔틀버스가 돌아왔다. 같은 운전사였다. 토마스는 일어섰다. "잘 가," 그가 말했다.

Polly stretched her wings. She lifted off the bench. She circled the visitor centre. She climbed.

폴리는 날개를 펼쳤다. 벤치에서 날아올랐다. 방문자 센터를 한 바퀴 돌았다. 그녀는 높이 올랐다.

The valley dropped away. El Capitan was on her left. Half Dome was on her right.

계곡은 점점 멀어졌다. 엘 캐피탄은 그녀의 왼쪽에 있었다. 하프 돔은 그녀의 오른쪽에 있었다.

At the rim, she banked west. Below her, a peregrine hunted small swifts along the cliff. Polly watched. Then she found the wind and let it carry her out of the park.

가장자리에서 그녀는 서쪽으로 방향을 틀었다. 아래에서는 매가 절벽을 따라 작은 칼새들을 사냥하고 있었다. 폴리는 지켜보았다. 그리고 바람을 찾아 공원을 벗어나도록 몸을 맡겼다.
