Leaving the Valley

Tomas the ranger came to the visitor centre at sunrise. He had a Thermos of coffee. He sat on a bench next to Polly.

レンジャーのトーマスは日の出とともにビジターセンターにやってきました。彼はコーヒーの入った魔法瓶を持っていました。彼はポリーの隣のベンチに座りました。

They did not say much. Polly preened her feathers. The morning smelled of the river.

二人はあまり話しませんでした。ポリーは羽を整えていました。朝の空気は川の香りがしました。

"You are leaving," Tomas said.

「君はここを離れるんだね」とトーマスが言いました。

Polly tilted her head.

ポリーは首をかしげました。

He told her about the rest of the park. The high country with its lakes. Another valley to the north. A grove of tall trees.

彼は公園の他の場所について話しました。湖のある高地や、北にある別の谷、高い木々のある林。

"This place is too big to see in three days," he said. "You only see pieces."

「この場所は三日で見るには広すぎるよ」と彼は言いました。「君はほんの一部しか見ていないんだ。」

Polly thought about her dives off the cliff. None of them were good. But each one was a little better. She could keep getting better for a lifetime.

ポリーは崖から飛び降りたことを思い出しました。どれも上手くいきませんでしたが、少しずつ良くなっていました。彼女は一生かけてもっと上手くなれるかもしれません。

The green shuttle bus came back. The same driver. Tomas stood up. "Off you go," he said.

緑色のシャトルバスが戻ってきました。同じ運転手です。トーマスは立ち上がりました。「さあ、行っておいで」と彼は言いました。

Polly stretched her wings. She lifted off the bench. She circled the visitor centre. She climbed.

ポリーは翼を伸ばしました。彼女はベンチから飛び立ちました。ビジターセンターの周りを旋回しました。そして、上昇しました。

The valley dropped away. El Capitan was on her left. Half Dome was on her right.

谷が下に広がっていきました。左にはエル・キャピタン、右にはハーフドームが見えました。

At the rim, she banked west. Below her, a peregrine hunted small swifts along the cliff. Polly watched. Then she found the wind and let it carry her out of the park.

縁に達すると、彼女は西に向かいました。彼女の下では、ハヤブサが崖沿いで小さなアマツバメを狩っていました。ポリーはそれを見ていました。そして、風を見つけて、それに乗って公園を離れていきました。
