Leaving the Valley

Tomas the ranger came to the visitor centre at sunrise. He had a Thermos of coffee. He sat on a bench next to Polly.

جاء توماس الحارس إلى مركز الزوار عند شروق الشمس. كان يحمل ترمسًا من القهوة. جلس على مقعد بجانب بولي.

They did not say much. Polly preened her feathers. The morning smelled of the river.

لم يتحدثا كثيرًا. بولي كانت تنظف ريشها. كانت رائحة الصباح تفوح من النهر.

"You are leaving," Tomas said.

قال توماس: "أنتِ تغادرين".

Polly tilted her head.

أمالت بولي رأسها.

He told her about the rest of the park. The high country with its lakes. Another valley to the north. A grove of tall trees.

أخبرها عن بقية الحديقة. البلاد العالية ببحيراتها. وادٍ آخر في الشمال. بستان من الأشجار الطويلة.

"This place is too big to see in three days," he said. "You only see pieces."

قال: "هذا المكان كبير جدًا لرؤيته في ثلاثة أيام فقط. ترى فقط أجزاء منه".

Polly thought about her dives off the cliff. None of them were good. But each one was a little better. She could keep getting better for a lifetime.

فكرت بولي في قفزاتها من الجرف. لم تكن أي منها جيدة. لكن كل واحدة كانت أفضل قليلاً. يمكنها أن تستمر في التحسن طوال حياتها.

The green shuttle bus came back. The same driver. Tomas stood up. "Off you go," he said.

عاد الحافلة الخضراء. نفس السائق. وقف توماس. وقال: "انطلقي".

Polly stretched her wings. She lifted off the bench. She circled the visitor centre. She climbed.

مدت بولي جناحيها. رفعت نفسها عن المقعد. دارت حول مركز الزوار. صعدت.

The valley dropped away. El Capitan was on her left. Half Dome was on her right.

انخفض الوادي بعيدًا. كان إل كابيتان على يسارها. وكان نصف القبة على يمينها.

At the rim, she banked west. Below her, a peregrine hunted small swifts along the cliff. Polly watched. Then she found the wind and let it carry her out of the park.

عند الحافة، اتجهت غربًا. تحتها، كان صقر الشاهين يصطاد طيور السويفت الصغيرة على طول الجرف. شاهدت بولي. ثم وجدت الريح وسمحت لها بحملها خارج الحديقة.
