Berta sözünü tuttu. Sabah dokuzda pençesinde sepetiyle yeşil kapıyı çalıyordu ve cumartesi pazarının kurulduğu meydana birlikte yürüdüler. Sokak portakal ve taze ekmek kokuyordu. “Günaydın!” diye seslendi Polly ilk tezgâhta ve tenteler sırasının tamamı sanki aynı anda cevap verdi.
Meyve tezgâhında çizgili önlüklü bir keçi elmaları kusursuz bir piramit hâlinde diziyordu. Polly yeşil ve dikenli bir şeyi işaret etti. “Bu ne? Bu meyveyi hiç görmedim.” Keçi güldü, ince bir dilim kesti ve uzattı. Polly bu mahallede önce tadına bakıldığını, kararın sonra verildiğini işte böyle öğrendi. “İki elma ve şunlardan bir tane istiyorum, tatmak için.”
