Polly al mercato

Berta ha mantenuto la promessa. Alle nove del mattino bussava già alla porta verde, con il cesto in zampa, e la strada fino alla piazza del mercato del sabato è stata fatta insieme. La via profumava di arance e di pane caldo. "Buongiorno!" ha salutato Polly al primo banco, e tutta la fila di tende sembrava rispondere in coro.

Berta kept her promise. At nine in the morning she was already knocking at the green door, basket in paw, and they walked together to the square where the Saturday market opens. The street smelled of oranges and fresh bread. "Good morning!" Polly called out at the first stall, and the whole row of awnings seemed to answer at once.

Al banco della frutta, una capra con il grembiule a righe impilava mele in una piramide perfetta. Polly ha indicato con la punta dell'ala qualcosa di verde e pieno di spine. "Che cos'è questo? Non ho mai visto questo frutto." La capra ha riso, ha tagliato una fetta sottile e l'ha offerta. È così che Polly ha imparato che in questo quartiere prima si assaggia e poi si decide. "Vorrei due mele e uno di quelli, per assaggiare."

At the fruit stall a goat in a striped apron was stacking apples into a perfect pyramid. Polly pointed at something green and spiky. "What is this? I have never seen this fruit." The goat laughed, cut a thin slice, and held it out. That is how Polly learned that in this neighborhood you taste first and decide later. "I want two apples and one of those, to try it."

"Quanto costa tutto insieme?" La capra ha detto un prezzo, Berta ha annuito per confermare che era giusto, e Polly ha contato le monete una a una, godendosi ogni singolo numero. "Un sacchetto, per favore. Devo portare tutto a casa." Sulla via del ritorno, con il sacchetto che dondolava sotto un'ala, Polly ha deciso che il mercato sarebbe diventato un'abitudine del sabato. "How much is it all together?" The goat named a price, Berta nodded that it was fair, and Polly counted out the coins one by one, proud of every single number. "A bag, please. I have to carry everything home." On the walk back, with the bag swinging under one wing, Polly decided that the market would be a Saturday habit. Some lessons taste better than they sound.
