Polly na targu
Berta keeps her promise and walks Polly through the Saturday market, where a spiky fruit, a chatty goat, and a handful of coins turn into a first real conversation.

Berta dotrzymuje obietnicy. Ulica pachnie pomarańczami i ciepłym chlebem. „Dzień dobry!” woła Polly przy pierwszym stoisku, a cały rząd markiz zdaje się odpowiadać naraz.
Przy stoisku z owocami koza w pasiastym fartuchu układa jabłka w idealną piramidę. Polly wskazuje końcem skrzydła coś zielonego i kolczastego. „Co to jest? Pierwszy raz widzę taki owoc.” Koza śmieje się, kroi cienki plasterek i podaje go.
Muszę wszystko zanieść do domu.”
