새에게 패배한 군대

한때 군대가 새에게 진 적이 있다. 역사가 지루하다고 말하는 친구에게 이 이야기를 보내 보라. 천구백삼십이 년 말, 호주 서부의 밀 농부들은 에뮤 때문에 수확을 잃고 있었다. 물을 찾아 수천 마리씩 몰려온 이 키 큰 날지 못하는 새들이 밭에서 곡식을 발견한 것이다.

An army once lost to birds. Send this to the friend who says history is dull. In late nineteen thirty-two, wheat farmers in Western Australia were losing their crop to emus, tall flightless birds that had arrived in their thousands looking for water and found fields of grain instead.

농부들은 정부에 도움을 요청했고, 정부는 기관총 두 정과 총알 만 발을 든 군인들을 보냈다. 서류상으로는 공평한 싸움이 아니었다. 하지만 들판에서는 상황이 완전히 달랐다. 에뮤는 빠르게 달리고 날카롭게 방향을 틀며 좀처럼 멈추지 않아서, 첫 총성이 울린 뒤 무리는 작은 무리들로 흩어져 그냥 계속 움직였다. 총은 걸렸다. 트럭도 써 보았지만, 땅이 너무 울퉁불퉁해서 조준할 수가 없었다.

The farmers asked the government for help, and the government sent soldiers with two machine guns and ten thousand rounds of ammunition. On paper it was not a fair fight. In the fields it went rather differently. Emus run fast, turn sharply and take a great deal of stopping, and after the first bursts of fire the flocks broke into small scattered groups and simply kept moving. The guns jammed. A truck was tried, and the ground was far too rough to aim from.

한 달쯤 지나자 군인들은 집으로 돌아갔다. 원래 무리에 비하면 훨씬 적은, 천 마리도 안 되는 새만 죽었고, 전 세계 신문들은 이 이야기를 신나게 다루었다. 그리고 전쟁이 선포된 줄도 몰랐던 에뮤들은 다시 밀을 먹으러 돌아갔다.

After about a month the soldiers went home. Fewer than one thousand birds had been killed out of a crowd many times that size, newspapers around the world had a wonderful time with the story, and the emus, who never knew that war had been declared, went back to eating the wheat.
