난롯가의 의자

게스트하우스는 항구 위에 서 있었고, 문은 바람이 닿지 않는 쪽에 있었다. 이 섬에서는 그쪽에 문을 낸다. 집을 지키는 이는 노스 로널드세이 암양이었다. 해초를 먹는 해안 양이다. 폴리는 현관에 섰다. "빈 방 있나요?"

The guesthouse stood above the harbour, with its door on the sheltered side. On these islands, that is the side you put a door on. It was kept by a North Ronaldsay ewe, one of the shore sheep that eat seaweed. Polly stood in the hall. "Do you have any available rooms?"

방은 있었다. 구월에는 대개 있다. 폴리가 말했다. "조용한 방으로 부탁드려요." 암양은 잠시 뜸을 들인 뒤 대답했다. 뒤쪽 방은 마당을 보고 앞쪽 방은 바다를 본다. 바람은 양쪽을 다 찾아낸다. 이틀 밤이 지나면 그 소리가 들리지 않게 된다.

There were rooms. There usually are in September. Polly said, "I would like a quiet room, please." The ewe waited a moment before she answered. The back rooms face the yard and the front rooms face the water. The wind finds both. After two nights you stop hearing it.

"Could you assist me with my luggage, please?" The ewe carried the bag up and set it beside a chair by the fire. Its frame was driftwood, because no tree grows here. Its back was oat straw, coiled into a hood. A joiner in Kirkwall named David Kirkness made that design standard in the middle of the eighteen hundreds.

"체크아웃은 몇 시인가요?" 폴리가 물었다. 이곳에서는 배가 모든 것을 정한다. 그러고는 의자에 앉았다. 짚 덮개가 문에서 들어오는 외풍을 막았고, 배에서 내린 뒤 처음으로 폴리는 자기 숨소리를 들었다.

"What time is check-out?" Polly asked. The ferry decides everything here. Then she sat in the chair. The straw hood cut the draught from the door, and for the first time since the boat she could hear herself breathe.
