リスボンで道に迷って

ソフィアは博物館まで三つの通りを行けばいいと確信していた。地図によると、左に曲がるだけでよかった。しかし、リスボンの通りは他の都市の通りのようには振る舞わなかった。坂道を上り、くねくね曲がり、突然行き止まりになった。

Sofía was sure the museum was three streets away. According to her map, all she had to do was turn left. But Lisbon's streets did not behave like streets in other cities. They climbed. They twisted. They ended without warning.

二十分後、彼女はどの地図にも載っていない小さな広場で立ち止まった。猫が椅子の上で眠っていた。年老いた女性がバルコニーから洗濯物を干していた。

After twenty minutes, she stopped on a small square she had never seen on any map. A cat was asleep on a chair. An old woman was hanging clothes from a balcony.

「すみません」とソフィアは上に向かって声をかけた。「博物館への道をご存知ですか？」老女は眉をひそめて中に消えた。ソフィアは自分が失礼だったと思った。しかし一分後、その女性は建物の正面玄関からゆっくりと出てきて、紙切れを持っていた。

"Excuse me," Sofía called up. "Do you know the way to the museum?" The old woman frowned and disappeared inside. Sofía thought she had been rude. But a minute later, the woman came out of the front door of the building, slowly, holding a piece of paper.

彼女は手描きの小さな地図を描いていた。三つの通り、二つの角、そして噴水。「この辺りでは携帯を信用してはだめよ」と彼女は慎重な英語で言った。「この地区では携帯が混乱するのよ。」

She had drawn a small map by hand. Three streets, two corners, a fountain. "Don't trust the phone here," she said in careful English. "The phone gets confused in this neighborhood."

ソフィアは彼女に感謝した。その日の午後、博物館を見つけることはできなかった。しかし、その手描きの地図を旅行の間ずっと大切に持っていた。

Sofía thanked her. She did not find the museum that afternoon. She kept the paper map for the rest of the trip.
