Perdue à Lisbonne

Sofía était sûre que le musée était à trois rues. D'après son plan, il ne lui restait qu'à tourner à gauche. Mais les rues de Lisbonne ne se comportaient pas comme celles des autres villes. Elles montaient. Elles tournaient. Elles s'arrêtaient sans prévenir.

Sofía was sure the museum was three streets away. According to her map, all she had to do was turn left. But Lisbon's streets did not behave like streets in other cities. They climbed. They twisted. They ended without warning.

Après vingt minutes, elle s'est arrêtée sur une petite place qu'elle n'avait jamais vue sur aucun plan. Un chat dormait sur une chaise. Une vieille dame étendait du linge depuis un balcon.

After twenty minutes, she stopped on a small square she had never seen on any map. A cat was asleep on a chair. An old woman was hanging clothes from a balcony.

— Excusez-moi, a appelé Sofía vers le haut. Savez-vous comment aller au musée ? — La dame a froncé les sourcils et a disparu à l'intérieur. Sofía a cru qu'elle avait été impolie. Mais une minute plus tard, la dame est sortie par la porte de l'immeuble, doucement, un papier à la main.

"Excuse me," Sofía called up. "Do you know the way to the museum?" The old woman frowned and disappeared inside. Sofía thought she had been rude. But a minute later, the woman came out of the front door of the building, slowly, holding a piece of paper.

Elle avait dessiné un petit plan à la main. Trois rues, deux coins, une fontaine. — Ne faites pas confiance au téléphone ici, a-t-elle dit dans un anglais soigné. Le téléphone se perd dans ce quartier.

She had drawn a small map by hand. Three streets, two corners, a fountain. "Don't trust the phone here," she said in careful English. "The phone gets confused in this neighborhood."

Sofía l'a remerciée. Elle n'a pas trouvé le musée cet après-midi-là. Elle a gardé le plan en papier pendant le reste du voyage.

Sofía thanked her. She did not find the museum that afternoon. She kept the paper map for the rest of the trip.
