Persa a Lisbona

Sofía era sicura che il museo fosse a tre strade di distanza. Secondo la sua mappa, doveva solo girare a sinistra. Ma le strade di Lisbona non si comportavano come quelle di altre città. Salivano. Si torcevano. Finivano senza preavviso.

Sofía was sure the museum was three streets away. According to her map, all she had to do was turn left. But Lisbon's streets did not behave like streets in other cities. They climbed. They twisted. They ended without warning.

Dopo venti minuti, si fermò in una piccola piazza che non aveva mai visto su nessuna mappa. Un gatto dormiva su una sedia. Una signora anziana stendeva il bucato da un balcone.

After twenty minutes, she stopped on a small square she had never seen on any map. A cat was asleep on a chair. An old woman was hanging clothes from a balcony.

«Mi scusi», chiamò Sofía verso l'alto. «Sa come si arriva al museo?» La signora aggrottò le sopracciglia e sparì dentro. Sofía pensò di essere stata maleducata. Ma un minuto dopo, la signora uscì dalla porta del palazzo, lentamente, con un pezzo di carta in mano.

"Excuse me," Sofía called up. "Do you know the way to the museum?" The old woman frowned and disappeared inside. Sofía thought she had been rude. But a minute later, the woman came out of the front door of the building, slowly, holding a piece of paper.

Aveva disegnato a mano una piccola mappa. Tre strade, due angoli, una fontana. «Non si fidi del telefono qui», disse in un inglese curato. «Il telefono si confonde in questo quartiere.»

She had drawn a small map by hand. Three streets, two corners, a fountain. "Don't trust the phone here," she said in careful English. "The phone gets confused in this neighborhood."

Sofía la ringraziò. Quel pomeriggio non trovò il museo. Si tenne la mappa di carta per il resto del viaggio.

Sofía thanked her. She did not find the museum that afternoon. She kept the paper map for the rest of the trip.
