ミツバチはどうやってハチミツを作るの

ミツバチは小さいですが、とてもよく働きます。働きバチは一日中、花から花へ飛びます。長い舌で花の甘い汁を飲みます。この甘い汁は「花蜜」と呼ばれます。ハチはそれを特別な胃に入れます。

Honeybees are small, but they work very hard. A worker bee flies from flower to flower all day. It drinks the sweet juice from the flowers with its long tongue. This sweet juice is called nectar, and the bee keeps it in a special stomach.

巣に戻ると、ハチは花蜜を他のハチに渡します。ハチたちは口から口へそれを渡し、体から少し何かを加えます。それから花蜜を小さな蝋の部屋に入れます。ハチは羽を速く動かして、それを乾かします。花蜜は少しずつ濃いハチミツになります。

Back at the hive, the bee gives the nectar to other bees. They pass it from mouth to mouth and add a little something from their bodies. Then they put the nectar into small wax rooms. The bees move their wings fast to dry it, and slowly the nectar becomes thick honey.

ハチミツができると、ハチは小さな部屋を柔らかい蝋のふたで閉じます。このハチミツは、寒い冬に巣全体の食べ物になります。一匹の小さなハチは、一生でほんの少しの雫しか作れません。だから、ハチたちは力を合わせて巣を満たします。

When the honey is ready, the bees close each little room with a soft wax lid. The honey is now food for the whole hive in the cold winter. One small bee makes only a tiny drop in its life, so the bees must work together to fill the hive.
