La quantità è la parte sorprendente. In mare aperto gli uccelli dormivano circa quaranta minuti in un'intera giornata, in brevi raffiche di pochi secondi ciascuna. Tornati a terra, gli stessi uccelli dormivano più di dodici ore. Così riescono ad andare avanti con pochissimo sonno per una settimana intera, e poi tornano a casa e recuperano tutto.
