Ein Fregattvogel kann tagelang über dem offenen Ozean in der Luft bleiben. Er kann nicht auf dem Wasser landen, weil seine Federn nicht wasserdicht sind, also kommt er einfach nicht herunter. Das wirft eine offensichtliche Frage auf. Wann schläft er?
Forscher beantworteten das, indem sie Fregattvögeln kleine Hirnrekorder anbrachten und sie fliegen ließen. Die Vögel flogen bis zu zehn Tage lang ohne Unterbrechung. Sie schliefen tatsächlich im Flug, und oft schlief nur eine Hälfte des Gehirns gleichzeitig, während die andere Hälfte wach blieb und ein Auge offen hielt. Wenn sie in warmer aufsteigender Luft nach oben kreisten, war meist die Hälfte wach, die die Kurve im Blick hatte.
Die Menge ist das Überraschende daran. Draußen auf See schliefen die Vögel an einem ganzen Tag etwa vierzig Minuten, in kurzen Schüben von jeweils nur wenigen Sekunden. Zurück an Land schliefen dieselben Vögel mehr als zwölf Stunden. Sie kommen also eine Woche lang fast ohne Schlaf aus, und dann fliegen sie nach Hause und holen alles nach.
