La pietra si chiama larimar, e c'è esattamente un solo posto sulla Terra da cui esce dal terreno: un unico fianco di collina tra le montagne sopra questa costa. La gente ha cercato un secondo giacimento per cinquant'anni e nessuno l'ha mai trovato. Gli uomini che la scavano lavorano con attrezzi a mano e secchi su corde, perché una macchina distruggerebbe proprio la cosa che sono venuti a cercare.
Il nome non è antico. Nel millenovecentosettantaquattro un uomo di nome Miguel Méndez seguì i ciottoli blu risalendo un fiume finché non trovò da dove cadevano, e chiamò la pietra col nome di sua figlia Larissa e la parola spagnola per il mare. Se mai ne compri una, guarda bene il colore. Più il blu è profondo, più in basso qualcuno ha dovuto scendere in quella collina.
