Estás de pie en una playa de piedras grises en el suroeste de la República Dominicana. Aquí casi no hay arena. Vas dando vuelta a los guijarros con el pie, como hace todo el mundo, y entonces uno de ellos te detiene. Es azul. No está pintado y no es vidrio. Es azul por completo, por dentro y por fuera.
La piedra se llama larimar, y hay exactamente un lugar en la Tierra donde sale del suelo: una sola ladera en las montañas que hay sobre esta costa. La gente lleva cincuenta años buscando un segundo lugar y nadie lo ha encontrado nunca. Los hombres que la sacan trabajan con herramientas de mano y cubos atados a cuerdas, porque una máquina destrozaría justo aquello que fueron a buscar.
El nombre no es antiguo. En mil novecientos setenta y cuatro, un hombre llamado Miguel Méndez siguió los guijarros azules río arriba hasta encontrar de dónde caían, y bautizó la piedra con el nombre de su hija Larissa y la palabra española para el mar. Si alguna vez compras una, fíjate bien en el color. Cuanto más profundo es el azul, más abajo tuvo que bajar alguien dentro de ese cerro.
