Der Ring of Brodgar liegt zwischen zwei Seen. Die Steine stehen in einem Kreis von etwa hundertvier Metern Durchmesser. Menschen bauten ihn vor etwa viertausend Jahren.
Einst waren es etwa sechzig Steine. Sechsunddreißig stehen heute noch. Polly ging außen herum. Niemand schrieb auf, warum der Kreis dort ist.
Dann war es Zeit zu gehen. Im Hafenbüro saß ein Kormoran hinter einem Tresen. "Wann fährt die Fähre ab?", fragte Polly. "Wie viel kostet das?" Dann sagte sie: "Ich möchte bitte ein Ticket kaufen."
"Wie lange dauert die Überfahrt?", fragte sie zuletzt. Am Morgen fuhr das Schiff an der flachen Landzunge vorbei hinaus. Die Inseln sanken dahinter weg, eine nach der anderen.
