돌의 원과 아침 배

브로드가 환상열석은 두 호수 사이에 서 있다. 돌들은 지름이 백사 미터쯤 되는 원을 이룬다. 사천 년쯤 전에 사람들이 세웠다.

The Ring of Brodgar stands between two lochs. The stones make a circle about one hundred and four metres across. People built it about four thousand years ago.

한때는 예순 개 남짓의 돌이 있었다. 지금은 서른여섯 개가 서 있다. 폴리는 바깥쪽을 걸었다. 그 원이 왜 거기 있는지는 아무도 적어 두지 않았다.

There were around sixty stones once. Thirty-six are standing now. Polly walked around the outside. Nobody wrote down why the circle is there.

이제 떠날 시간이었다. 항구 사무소 카운터 뒤에는 가마우지 한 마리가 있었다. "여객선은 몇 시에 출발하나요?" 폴리가 물었다. "이건 얼마예요?" 그리고 말했다. "표 한 장 사고 싶어요."

Then it was time to leave. At the harbour office there was a shag behind a counter. "What time does the ferry leave?" Polly asked. "How much does this cost?" Then she said, "I would like to buy a ticket, please."

"건너는 데 얼마나 걸리나요?" 마지막으로 그렇게 물었다. 아침에 배는 낮은 곶을 지나 나아갔다. 섬들이 하나씩 뒤로 내려앉았다.

"How long does the crossing take?" she asked last. In the morning the boat went out past the low headland. The islands went down behind it, one by one.
