A Table for One

Mia goes into a small restaurant at nine. The room is almost empty. A tired waiter in a white apron points to a table in the corner.

Mia entra num restaurante pequeno às nove. A sala está quase vazia. Um garçom cansado, de avental branco, aponta para uma mesa no canto.

"Just one?" he asks. Mia says yes. She always travels alone. She is a little nervous. The menu is on one small piece of paper.

"Só uma pessoa?" ele pergunta. Mia diz que sim. Ela sempre viaja sozinha. Ela está um pouco nervosa. O cardápio está numa folha de papel pequena.

Mia points at a word. She does not know it. The waiter smiles. "The special," he says slowly. "My grandmother's food. If you do not like it, I bring something else."

Mia aponta para uma palavra. Ela não conhece essa palavra. O garçom sorri. "O prato especial", ele diz devagar. "A comida da minha avó. Se você não gostar, eu trago outra coisa."

The food comes in a heavy bowl. It is hot, with garlic and little pieces of bread. Mia tries it. The waiter watches her from the bar.

A comida chega numa tigela pesada. Está quente, com alho e pedacinhos de pão. Mia experimenta. O garçom observa ela do balcão.

Mia gives him a thumbs up. He laughs and fills her glass again. "Good," he says. "Come back tomorrow. Then I tell you what is in it."

Mia faz sinal de positivo para ele. Ele ri e enche o copo dela de novo. "Bom", ele diz. "Volte amanhã. Aí eu conto o que tem dentro."
