A Table for One

Mia goes into a small restaurant at nine. The room is almost empty. A tired waiter in a white apron points to a table in the corner.

미아는 아홉 시에 작은 식당에 들어가요. 방은 거의 비어 있어요. 지친 웨이터가 하얀 앞치마를 입고 구석 자리를 가리켜요.

"Just one?" he asks. Mia says yes. She always travels alone. She is a little nervous. The menu is on one small piece of paper.

"한 분이세요?" 그가 물어요. 미아는 네라고 말해요. 그녀는 항상 혼자 여행해요. 그녀는 조금 긴장돼요. 메뉴는 작은 종이 한 장에 있어요.

Mia points at a word. She does not know it. The waiter smiles. "The special," he says slowly. "My grandmother's food. If you do not like it, I bring something else."

미아는 한 단어를 가리켜요. 그녀는 그 말을 몰라요. 웨이터가 웃어요. "오늘의 특별 요리예요." 그가 천천히 말해요. "우리 할머니의 음식이에요. 마음에 안 들면 다른 것을 가져다드릴게요."

The food comes in a heavy bowl. It is hot, with garlic and little pieces of bread. Mia tries it. The waiter watches her from the bar.

음식은 무거운 그릇에 나와요. 뜨겁고, 마늘과 작은 빵 조각이 들어 있어요. 미아는 먹어 봐요. 웨이터는 바에서 그녀를 지켜봐요.

Mia gives him a thumbs up. He laughs and fills her glass again. "Good," he says. "Come back tomorrow. Then I tell you what is in it."

미아는 엄지손가락을 들어 보여요. 그는 웃으면서 그녀의 잔을 다시 채워요. "좋아요." 그가 말해요. "내일 또 오세요. 그때 이 안에 뭐가 들었는지 말해 드릴게요."
