The Mist Closes Behind Her

On her last afternoon, Polly flew high above the coast. Below her were the tea fields, the crater lakes, and the quiet forest. The island looked like old volcanoes, still slowly turning green.

Na sua última tarde, Polly voou alto acima da costa. Por baixo dela estavam os campos de chá, as lagoas da cratera e a floresta calma. A ilha parecia feita de vulcões antigos, ainda a ficar verdes devagar.

Boats went back to the harbor. Lights came on along the coast. Smoke smell drifted up from the shore.

Os barcos voltaram ao porto. As luzes acenderam-se ao longo da costa. Um cheiro a fumo subia da praia.

Fog came in from the sea. It covered the crater, then the tea fields, then the harbor. Polly had seen this before.

O nevoeiro chegou do mar. Cobriu a cratera, depois os campos de chá, depois o porto. Polly já tinha visto isto antes.

She flew out over the water. Behind her, the island kept cooking dinner underground and growing tea. A small grey bird stayed safe in its forest.

Ela voou para o mar aberto. Atrás dela, a ilha continuava a cozinhar o jantar debaixo da terra e a fazer crescer chá. Uma pequena ave cinzenta ficou segura na sua floresta.
