The Mist Closes Behind Her

On her last afternoon, Polly flew high above the coast. Below her were the tea fields, the crater lakes, and the quiet forest. The island looked like old volcanoes, still slowly turning green.

Op haar laatste middag vloog Polly hoog boven de kust. Onder haar lagen de theevelden, de kratermeren en het stille bos. Het eiland leek op oude vulkanen die langzaam groen worden.

Boats went back to the harbor. Lights came on along the coast. Smoke smell drifted up from the shore.

Boten voeren terug naar de haven. Langs de kust gingen lichten aan. Vanaf de kust kwam de geur van rook omhoog.

Fog came in from the sea. It covered the crater, then the tea fields, then the harbor. Polly had seen this before.

Mist kwam van de zee. Hij bedekte de krater, toen de theevelden, toen de haven. Polly had dit al eerder gezien.

She flew out over the water. Behind her, the island kept cooking dinner underground and growing tea. A small grey bird stayed safe in its forest.

Ze vloog weg over het water. Achter haar kookte het eiland nog zijn avondeten onder de grond en verbouwde het zijn thee. Een klein grijs vogeltje bleef veilig in zijn bos.
