The First Light in the Village

Late at night, the village is dark and quiet. Every house is asleep. The streets are empty, and the windows are black. But on one small street there is a single light. It comes from the window of the bakery, the only place awake in the whole sleeping town.

Tarde da noite, a vila fica escura e quieta. Todas as casas estão dormindo. As ruas estão vazias, e as janelas estão escuras. Mas em uma ruazinha há uma única luz. Ela vem da janela da padaria, o único lugar acordado em toda a cidade adormecida.

It is three in the morning, and the baker is already at work. He lights the big oven and feeds it wood until it glows. Flour floats in the air, and steam rises as the first loaves go in. The warm smell of fresh bread begins to fill the shop. Slowly, it drifts out the door and down the empty street, where no one is awake yet to notice it.

São três horas da manhã, e o padeiro já está trabalhando. Ele acende o forno grande e o alimenta com lenha até ele brilhar. A farinha flutua no ar, e o vapor sobe enquanto os primeiros pães entram no forno. O cheiro quente de pão fresco começa a encher a loja. Devagar, ele escapa pela porta e desce pela rua vazia, onde ninguém está acordado ainda para notar.

By six in the morning, the village starts to wake. People open their eyes to the smell of warm bread. They walk to the bakery, where the light has been on all night, and they find the shelves full of fresh loaves. The baker hands them their bread with tired, happy eyes. His long night becomes the warm, soft start of everyone else's day.

Por volta das seis da manhã, a vila começa a acordar. As pessoas abrem os olhos com o cheiro de pão quente. Elas caminham até a padaria, onde a luz ficou acesa a noite toda, e encontram as prateleiras cheias de pães frescos. O padeiro entrega o pão com olhos cansados e felizes. A longa noite dele se torna o começo quente e suave do dia de todo mundo.
