Goodbye to Pasta

On the seventh morning, Polly came to the tank early. The lab was quiet.

Na sétima manhã, Polly chegou cedo ao tanque. O laboratório estava silencioso.

Pasta was at the front of the tank. This was new. For six days, the octopus had been folded in her pipe, or in a corner. Today she was pressed against the glass. All eight arms were spread. Her eye was level with Polly's.

Pasta estava na frente do tanque. Isso era novo. Durante seis dias, o polvo tinha ficado encolhido em seu tubo ou em um canto. Hoje, ela estava pressionada contra o vidro. Todos os oito braços estavam abertos. Seu olho estava na altura do de Polly.

They looked at each other.

Elas se olharam.

What passes between a parrot and an octopus is probably not friendship. Octopuses can sense warmth through their skin. They can sense movement through their suckers. The octopus was collecting information.

O que passa entre um papagaio e um polvo provavelmente não é amizade. Polvos podem sentir calor através da pele. Eles podem perceber movimento através das ventosas. O polvo estava coletando informações.

Polly hopped along the rim. The octopus's eye tracked her. When Polly stopped, the eye stopped.

Polly pulou ao longo da borda. O olho do polvo a seguiu. Quando Polly parou, o olho parou.

For seven minutes they watched each other.

Por sete minutos, elas se observaram.

Then the octopus did something new. She slowly unfurled one arm. She pressed the tip of it against the inside of the glass, exactly opposite Polly's foot. The suckers spread, then stilled.

Então o polvo fez algo novo. Lentamente, ela desenrolou um braço. Pressionou a ponta dele contra o lado interno do vidro, exatamente oposto à pata de Polly. As ventosas se abriram e depois ficaram imóveis.

Polly touched the outside of the glass with her beak.

Polly tocou o lado de fora do vidro com seu bico.

The arm stayed for one long minute. Then it slid back into the water.

O braço ficou por um longo minuto. Depois deslizou de volta para a água.

Chiara came in with two coffees. "You are leaving," she said. "Travel safely."

Chiara entrou com dois cafés. "Você está indo embora", ela disse. "Viaje com segurança."

Polly flew out of the institute. The Bay of Naples opened in front of her. She climbed and found the wind.

Polly voou para fora do instituto. A Baía de Nápoles se abriu à sua frente. Ela subiu e encontrou o vento.
