La settima mattina, Polly arrivò presto al serbatoio. Il laboratorio era silenzioso.
Pasta era davanti al vetro del serbatoio. Era una novità. Per sei giorni, il polpo era rimasto nascosto nel suo tubo o in un angolo. Oggi era premuto contro il vetro. Tutti e otto i tentacoli erano distesi. Il suo occhio era all'altezza di quello di Polly.
Si guardarono.
Quello che passa tra un pappagallo e un polpo probabilmente non è amicizia. I polpi possono percepire il calore attraverso la pelle. Possono percepire il movimento attraverso le ventose. Il polpo stava raccogliendo informazioni.
Polly saltellò lungo il bordo. L'occhio del polpo la seguiva. Quando Polly si fermò, l'occhio si fermò.
Per sette minuti si osservarono.
Poi il polpo fece qualcosa di nuovo. Lentamente srotolò un tentacolo. Premette la punta contro l'interno del vetro, esattamente di fronte alla zampa di Polly. Le ventose si aprirono, poi si fermarono.
Polly toccò l'esterno del vetro con il becco.
Il tentacolo rimase per un lungo minuto. Poi scivolò di nuovo nell'acqua.
Chiara entrò con due caffè. "Stai partendo," disse. "Buon viaggio."
Polly volò fuori dall'istituto. Il Golfo di Napoli si aprì davanti a lei. Si alzò in volo e trovò il vento.
