Goodbye to Pasta

On the seventh morning, Polly came to the tank early. The lab was quiet.

Op de zevende ochtend kwam Polly vroeg naar de tank. Het laboratorium was stil.

Pasta was at the front of the tank. This was new. For six days, the octopus had been folded in her pipe, or in a corner. Today she was pressed against the glass. All eight arms were spread. Her eye was level with Polly's.

Pasta was aan de voorkant van de tank. Dit was nieuw. Zes dagen lang had de octopus zich in haar pijp of in een hoekje verstopt. Vandaag drukte ze zich tegen het glas. Al haar acht armen waren gespreid. Haar oog was op gelijke hoogte met dat van Polly.

They looked at each other.

Ze keken elkaar aan.

What passes between a parrot and an octopus is probably not friendship. Octopuses can sense warmth through their skin. They can sense movement through their suckers. The octopus was collecting information.

Wat er tussen een papegaai en een octopus gebeurt, is waarschijnlijk geen vriendschap. Octopussen kunnen warmte door hun huid voelen. Ze kunnen beweging door hun zuignappen waarnemen. De octopus verzamelde informatie.

Polly hopped along the rim. The octopus's eye tracked her. When Polly stopped, the eye stopped.

Polly hupte langs de rand. Het oog van de octopus volgde haar. Toen Polly stopte, stopte het oog ook.

For seven minutes they watched each other.

Zeven minuten lang keken ze naar elkaar.

Then the octopus did something new. She slowly unfurled one arm. She pressed the tip of it against the inside of the glass, exactly opposite Polly's foot. The suckers spread, then stilled.

Toen deed de octopus iets nieuws. Ze ontvouwde langzaam een arm. Ze drukte de punt ervan tegen de binnenkant van het glas, precies tegenover Polly's poot. De zuignappen spreidden zich en werden toen stil.

Polly touched the outside of the glass with her beak.

Polly raakte met haar snavel de buitenkant van het glas aan.

The arm stayed for one long minute. Then it slid back into the water.

De arm bleef een lange minuut. Toen gleed hij terug in het water.

Chiara came in with two coffees. "You are leaving," she said. "Travel safely."

Chiara kwam binnen met twee kopjes koffie. "Je gaat weg," zei ze. "Reis veilig."

Polly flew out of the institute. The Bay of Naples opened in front of her. She climbed and found the wind.

Polly vloog het instituut uit. De Baai van Napels opende zich voor haar. Ze klom omhoog en vond de wind.
