Goodbye to Pasta

On the seventh morning, Polly came to the tank early. The lab was quiet.

Le septième matin, Polly arriva tôt au bassin. Le laboratoire était silencieux.

Pasta was at the front of the tank. This was new. For six days, the octopus had been folded in her pipe, or in a corner. Today she was pressed against the glass. All eight arms were spread. Her eye was level with Polly's.

Pâtes était à l'avant du bassin. C'était nouveau. Pendant six jours, la pieuvre était restée repliée dans son tuyau ou dans un coin. Aujourd'hui, elle était collée contre la vitre. Ses huit bras étaient déployés. Son œil était au niveau de celui de Polly.

They looked at each other.

Elles se regardèrent.

What passes between a parrot and an octopus is probably not friendship. Octopuses can sense warmth through their skin. They can sense movement through their suckers. The octopus was collecting information.

Ce qui passe entre un perroquet et une pieuvre n'est probablement pas de l'amitié. Les pieuvres peuvent sentir la chaleur à travers leur peau. Elles peuvent percevoir le mouvement grâce à leurs ventouses. La pieuvre recueillait des informations.

Polly hopped along the rim. The octopus's eye tracked her. When Polly stopped, the eye stopped.

Polly sauta le long du bord. L'œil de la pieuvre la suivait. Quand Polly s'arrêta, l'œil s'arrêta aussi.

For seven minutes they watched each other.

Pendant sept minutes, elles se regardèrent.

Then the octopus did something new. She slowly unfurled one arm. She pressed the tip of it against the inside of the glass, exactly opposite Polly's foot. The suckers spread, then stilled.

Puis la pieuvre fit quelque chose de nouveau. Elle déroula lentement un bras. Elle appuya le bout contre l'intérieur de la vitre, exactement en face de la patte de Polly. Les ventouses s'étalèrent, puis se figèrent.

Polly touched the outside of the glass with her beak.

Polly toucha l'extérieur de la vitre avec son bec.

The arm stayed for one long minute. Then it slid back into the water.

Le bras resta pendant une longue minute. Puis il glissa de nouveau dans l'eau.

Chiara came in with two coffees. "You are leaving," she said. "Travel safely."

Chiara entra avec deux cafés. "Tu pars," dit-elle. "Voyage en sécurité."

Polly flew out of the institute. The Bay of Naples opened in front of her. She climbed and found the wind.

Polly s'envola hors de l'institut. La baie de Naples s'ouvrit devant elle. Elle monta et trouva le vent.
