Roep, of je mist je halte

Je zit in een klein busje met veertien andere mensen. Er is geen bel. Er is geen scherm met de naam van de volgende halte. De chauffeur heeft geen lijst, en niemand gaat je helpen.

You are in a small van with fourteen other people. There is no bell. There is no screen with the name of the next stop. The driver does not have a list, and nobody is going to help you.

Dit is een deelbus, en in veel landen werkt het op dezelfde manier. Hij vertrekt als hij vol is. Hij stopt waar iemand vraagt om te stoppen. Jouw taak is om iets hardop te zeggen voordat je straat voorbijgaat.

This is a shared bus, and in many countries it works the same way. It leaves when it is full. It stops where somebody asks it to stop. Your job is to say something out loud before your street goes past the window.

Je hebt maar twee of drie woorden nodig. Je zegt de naam van de hoek, of je zegt gewoon: hier is goed, alstublieft. Als je wacht tot je je eigen deur kunt zien, ben je al te laat. Zeg het vroeg, zeg het hardop, en zeg het nog eens als niemand je de eerste keer hoort. De vrouw naast je herhaalt het voor je als je verdwaald lijkt. Dat gebeurt vaker dan je zou denken.

You only need two or three words. You say the name of the corner, or you simply say: here is good, please. If you wait until you can see your own door, you are already too late. Say it early, say it loudly, and say it again if nobody hears you the first time. The woman next to you will repeat it for you if you look lost. That happens more often than you would think.
