飛びながら眠るこの鳥

グンカンドリは何日も飛び続けることができます。開けた海の上を飛びます。水面には降りられません。では、いつ眠るのでしょうか。

A frigatebird can fly for many days. It flies over the open sea. It cannot land on the water. So when does it sleep?

科学者たちは、鳥に小さな機械を付けました。鳥は最長十日間、飛び続けます。飛びながら眠ります。脳の半分だけが眠ります。片方の目は開いたままです。

Scientists put small machines on the birds. The birds fly for up to ten days. They sleep while they fly. Half the brain sleeps. One eye stays open.

これは驚くべきことです。海の上では、鳥は一日にたった四十分しか眠りません。陸では、十二時間以上眠ります。家では、たくさん休むのです。

This is surprising. At sea, birds sleep only forty minutes a day. On land, they sleep more than twelve hours. They rest a lot at home.
