Tämä lintu nukkuu lentäessään

Fregattilintu voi lentää monta päivää. Se lentää avomeren yllä. Se ei voi laskeutua veteen. Milloin se siis nukkuu?

A frigatebird can fly for many days. It flies over the open sea. It cannot land on the water. So when does it sleep?

Tutkijat kiinnittivät lintuihin pieniä laitteita. Linnut lentävät jopa kymmenen päivää. Ne nukkuvat lentäessään. Puoli aivoista nukkuu. Toinen silmä pysyy auki.

Scientists put small machines on the birds. The birds fly for up to ten days. They sleep while they fly. Half the brain sleeps. One eye stays open.

Tämä on yllättävää. Merellä linnut nukkuvat vain neljäkymmentä minuuttia päivässä. Maalla ne nukkuvat yli kaksitoista tuntia. Ne lepäävät paljon kotona.

This is surprising. At sea, birds sleep only forty minutes a day. On land, they sleep more than twelve hours. They rest a lot at home.
