嵐があらわした村

ポリーは行き先を一つだけ書いていた。「そこへの行き方を教えてもらえますか。」と朝食のときに雌羊に聞いた。海沿いの道を西へ行きなさい、と雌羊は言った。スケイル湾は淡い色の砂が長く弧を描く浜だ。その奥に緑の段丘があり、スカラ・ブレイの村はそこに半分沈んで建っている。

Polly had one place written down. "Can you tell me how to get there?" she asked the ewe at breakfast. Follow the coast road west, the ewe said. The Bay of Skaill is a long curve of pale sand. Behind it is a green shelf, and the village sits there, half sunk into the ground.

遺跡ではミヤコドリが餌をさがしていた。ポリーは聞いた。「この遺跡の歴史を知りたいのですが。」五千年前、ここに人が住んでいた、と彼は言った。ストーンヘンジよりも大ピラミッドよりも前に、この海岸で畑を作っていた。そのあと砂が村を四千年おおい、千八百五十年の嵐が砂を持ち去った。

An oystercatcher was working the site. Polly asked, "I would like to know the history of this particular monument." People lived here five thousand years ago, he said. They farmed this coast before Stonehenge and before the Great Pyramid. Then sand covered the village for four thousand years, until a storm in eighteen fifty took it away.

The wind took half of that. "Could you please repeat that for me?" Polly asked. Every house has the same furniture in the same places. A hearth in the middle. Beds at each side. A stone dresser against the far wall. It is stone because there was no wood.

「明日、博物館が開いているか教えてもらえますか。」とポリーは聞いた。また来ることはわかっていた。彼女は一軒の家のふちに立ち、部屋の中を見ていた。誰もが自分の部屋を整えるのと同じように整えられた部屋だった。

"Could you tell me if the museum is open tomorrow?" Polly asked. She knew she would come back. She stood at the edge of one house, looking into a room laid out the way anyone lays out a room.
