L'animale che fa i cubi

Un animale fa la cacca quadrata. Manda questo a chi pensa che la natura non abbia senso dell'umorismo. In Australia vive un animale basso, tozzo e peloso che si chiama vombato. Scava lunghe gallerie, mangia erba tutta la notte e lascia dietro di sé piccoli cubi ordinati.

One animal makes square poop. Send this to someone who thinks nature has no sense of humour. In Australia there is a low, heavy, furry animal called a wombat. It digs long tunnels, it eats grass all night, and it leaves behind small neat cubes.

Per anni nessuno riusciva a spiegarlo. Gli angoli sono difficili da fare. In ogni altro animale del pianeta, le cose morbide che escono da un corpo escono tonde o allungate. Così gli scienziati hanno guardato dentro un vombato e hanno trovato la risposta nell'ultimo tratto del suo intestino.

For years nobody could explain it. Corners are difficult to make. In every other animal on the planet, soft things that leave a body come out round or long. So scientists looked closely inside a wombat and found the answer in the last stretch of its gut.

Quel tratto non è uguale tutt'intorno. Alcune parti della parete sono rigide e stringono forte e in fretta. Altre sono morbide e si limitano a cedere. Le parti rigide premono dentro gli angoli, ancora e ancora, finché la forma si fissa e tiene. Poi il vombato impila i cubi finiti su sassi e tronchi per dire agli altri vombati di chi è quel terreno. Quelli tondi rotolerebbero via subito. I cubi restano esattamente dove li metti.

That stretch is not the same all the way around. Some parts of the wall are stiff and squeeze hard and fast. Other parts are soft and simply stretch. The stiff parts press the corners in, again and again, until the shape sets and holds. The wombat then stacks the finished cubes on rocks and logs to tell other wombats whose ground this is. Round ones would roll straight off. Cubes stay exactly where they are put.
