Der schmale Weg

Am Morgen hüpfte Polly in die Schlucht hinein. Drinnen war die Luft kühl und blau vor Schatten, obwohl es draußen in der Wüste schon brütend heiß war.

In the morning, Polly hopped into the canyon. Inside, the air was cool and blue with shadow, although outside the desert was already burning hot.

Die Menschen nennen diese Schlucht den Siq. An manchen Stellen ist sie nur drei Meter breit, so schmal, dass Polly fast beide Wände gleichzeitig berühren konnte, wenn sie ihre Flügel ausstreckte.

People call this canyon the Siq. In some places it is only three metres wide, so narrow that when Polly stretched out her wings, she could almost touch both walls at the same time.

Sie schaute nach oben. Weit über ihrem Kopf war der Himmel zu nichts weiter als einem dünnen blauen Band geworden, eingequetscht zwischen den dunkelroten Felswänden.

She looked up. Far above her head, the sky had become nothing more than a thin blue ribbon, squeezed between the dark red walls.

Dann bemerkte sie etwas Merkwürdiges. Ein kleiner Kanal war in die Felswand gemeißelt, der sich wie ein Band aus Stein an der Schlucht entlangzog. Vor langer Zeit hatte er Wasser geführt. Polly beschloss, ihm zu folgen und zu sehen, wohin er führte.

Then she noticed something strange. A small channel was carved into the rock wall, running along the canyon like a ribbon made of stone. Long ago, it had carried water. Polly decided to follow it and see where it went.
