This Blue Exists in One Place

You are standing on a beach of grey stones in the southwest of the Dominican Republic. There is almost no sand here. You turn the pebbles over with your foot, the way everybody does, and then one of them stops you. It is blue. Not painted, not glass. Blue the whole way through.

Du stehst auf einem Strand aus grauen Steinen im Südwesten der Dominikanischen Republik. Hier gibt es fast keinen Sand. Du drehst die Kiesel mit dem Fuß um, wie es jeder tut, und dann bringt dich einer davon zum Stehen. Er ist blau. Nicht bemalt, kein Glas. Blau bis in den Kern.

The stone is called larimar, and there is exactly one place on Earth where it comes out of the ground: a single hillside in the mountains above this coast. People have searched for a second one for fifty years and nobody has ever found it. The men who dig it out work with hand tools and buckets on ropes, because a machine would smash the very thing they came for.

Der Stein heißt larimar, und es gibt genau einen einzigen Ort auf der Erde, an dem er aus dem Boden kommt: einen einzigen Hang in den Bergen über dieser Küste. Man hat fünfzig Jahre lang nach einem zweiten gesucht, und niemand hat je einen gefunden. Die Männer, die ihn ausgraben, arbeiten mit Handwerkzeugen und Eimern an Seilen, denn eine Maschine würde genau das zerschlagen, weswegen sie gekommen sind.

The name is not old. In nineteen seventy four a man called Miguel Méndez followed the blue pebbles up a river until he found where they were falling from, and he named the stone after his daughter Larissa and the Spanish word for the sea. If you ever buy one, look hard at the colour. The deeper the blue, the further down that hill somebody had to go.

Der Name ist nicht alt. Im Jahr neunzehnhundertvierundsiebzig folgte ein Mann namens Miguel Méndez den blauen Kieseln einen Fluss hinauf, bis er fand, woher sie herunterfielen, und er benannte den Stein nach seiner Tochter Larissa und dem spanischen Wort für das Meer. Solltest du jemals einen kaufen, schau dir die Farbe genau an. Je tiefer das Blau, desto weiter musste jemand in diesen Hügel hinabsteigen.
