Negen eilanden, drie platen

Polly vloog laag over zwart vulkanisch gesteente, waar groene weiden tot aan de rand van de klif liepen en de mist landinwaarts over ronde heuvels schoof. Dit was São Miguel, het grootste van de negen Azoren-eilanden, alleen in de Noord-Atlantische Oceaan. Zilte lucht vermengde zich met natte aarde en gemaaid gras.
Het eiland bestaat door een naad diep onder de oceaanbodem, waar drie grote platen langzaam langs elkaar schuren. Noord-Amerika trekt de ene kant op, Europa de andere, en Afrika duwt vanuit het zuiden. Hitte stijgt op door de scheuren waar ze elkaar raken. Elk eiland hier is gebouwd uit vuur en afkoelend gesteente.
Bijna elke akker op São Miguel heeft een haag van hortensia's, blauw, violet en soms zachtroze, zo dicht dat ze op het land geschilderd lijken. Boeren haalden de planten in de negentiende eeuw uit Azië, alleen om de grenzen van hun akkers te markeren. De vulkanische grond, rijk aan mineralen, maakt de bloemblaadjes nog dieper blauw.
Verder landinwaarts vouwden groene heuvels zich rond stille kommen die Polly vanaf de kust niet kon zien. Ergens daartussen steeg vaag stoom op, dunne witte draden tegen de grijze lucht, en ze draaide richting het hoogland.
