Internet está bajo el agua

Internet vive bajo el agua. Mándaselo a quien todavía diga que todo está en la nube. Casi ningún mensaje que cruza un océano vuela. Viaja por cables tumbados en el fondo del mar, en el frío y la oscuridad, entre peces y cangrejos.

The internet lives underwater. Send this to anyone who still says everything is in the cloud. Nearly every message that crosses an ocean does not fly anywhere. It travels along cables lying on the sea floor, in the cold and the dark, beside fish and crabs.

Los cables son más finos de lo que la gente imagina. Mar adentro, en aguas profundas donde casi nada puede alcanzarlos, algunos no son más gruesos que una manguera de jardín. Dentro hay hilos de vidrio, y por ese vidrio corre la luz que lleva fotos, llamadas, películas y cada palabra que mandas a otro continente.

The cables are thinner than people expect. Far out in deep water, where almost nothing can reach them, some are no thicker than a garden hose. Inside are hairs of glass, and light runs along that glass carrying photos, calls, films and every word you send to another continent.

Hay cosas que los rompen. Los tiburones no, aunque uno mordió un cable una vez y la historia no ha muerto nunca. Casi siempre son las redes de pesca y las anclas pesadas que arrastran por el fondo. Pasa más de cien veces al año en algún lugar del mundo. Entonces sale un barco, busca la línea rota, la sube desde el fondo del mar, vuelve a unir el vidrio y la baja otra vez. Resulta que la nube se marea.

Things break them. Not sharks, although a shark did chew one once and the story has never died. Mostly it is fishing gear and heavy anchors dragging along the bottom. It happens more than a hundred times a year, somewhere in the world. Then a ship sails out, finds the broken line, lifts it up from the sea floor, joins the glass back together and lowers it down again. The cloud, it turns out, gets seasick.
