Das Internet liegt unter Wasser. Schick das jedem, der immer noch sagt, alles sei in der Cloud. Fast jede Nachricht, die einen Ozean überquert, fliegt überhaupt nicht. Sie läuft durch Kabel auf dem Meeresboden, in Kälte und Dunkelheit, neben Fischen und Krabben.
Die Kabel sind dünner, als man denkt. Weit draußen im tiefen Wasser, wo fast nichts an sie herankommt, sind manche nicht dicker als ein Gartenschlauch. Innen liegen Haare aus Glas, und durch dieses Glas läuft Licht, das Fotos, Anrufe, Filme und jedes Wort trägt, das du auf einen anderen Kontinent schickst.
Kaputt gehen sie trotzdem. Nicht durch Haie, auch wenn einmal ein Hai an einem geknabbert hat und die Geschichte seither nicht stirbt. Meistens sind es Fischereigerät und schwere Anker, die über den Grund schleifen. Das passiert mehr als hundert Mal im Jahr, irgendwo auf der Welt. Dann fährt ein Schiff hinaus, sucht die gerissene Leitung, hebt sie vom Meeresboden, fügt das Glas wieder zusammen und lässt sie zurück nach unten. Die Cloud wird also seekrank.
