집게발 안에 태양을 품은 새우

이 새우는 보기보다 훨씬 위험하다. 작은 것을 얕보는 사람에게 이 이야기를 보내 보라. 따뜻한 얕은 바다에는 손가락 길이도 안 되는 새우가 사는데, 이 새우는 발사 준비가 된 용수철처럼 유난히 큰 집게발 하나를 늘 세우고 있다.

이 새우가 집게발을 탁 닫으면, 그 속도가 너무 빨라서 목표물을 그냥 치는 데서 끝나지 않는다. 물속에 거품이 생기고 그 거품이 거의 순식간에 터지면서, 아주 짧은 순간 동안 거품 안쪽 온도가 태양 표면에 가까워진다. 소리만으로도 총소리보다 크고, 근처 작은 물고기를 기절시키거나 죽일 만큼 크다.

When the shrimp snaps that claw shut, it happens so fast that it does not just hit its target. It creates a bubble in the water that collapses almost instantly, and for a fraction of a second, the inside of that collapsing bubble reaches a temperature close to the surface of the sun. The sound alone is louder than a gunshot, loud enough to stun or kill small fish nearby.

새우 자신의 몸은 전혀 뜨거워지지 않는다. 열과 소리는 모두 거품에서 나오며, 느껴지기도 전에 사라진다. 산호초 근처에서 일하는 잠수부들은 새우 한 마리를 보기도 전에 그 탁 소리를 먼저 듣는 경우가 많다.

Nothing about the shrimp itself gets hot. The heat and the sound both come from the bubble, gone before it could ever be felt. Divers who work near coral reefs often hear the snapping sound before they see a single shrimp.
