夜に青く光る海岸

夜になると光る海岸がある。ランプの光でも、月の光でもない。波が砂浜に打ち寄せるたびに、水そのものが電気のような青色に光るのだ。波打ち際を歩けば、自分の足あとまで青く光って浮かび上がる。真夜中にベッドから引っぱり出してでも見せたい友達がいたら、タグ付けしよう。

Some beaches glow in the dark. Not from lamps, not from the moon. The water itself lights up, electric blue, every time a wave breaks on the sand. Walk along the edge and your own footprints flash blue behind you. Tag the friend you would drag out of bed at midnight to see this.

この光は、目に見えないほど小さな海の生き物たちが何十億も集まって作り出している。まわりの水が動くと、体が一瞬青く光る。海のホタルのようなものだ。科学者たちはこれを「生物発光」と呼んでいる。波が崩れるとき、何百万もの生き物が一気に刺激され、波全体がぱっと青く燃えるように光るのだ。

The light comes from billions of tiny sea creatures, far too small to see one by one. When the water around them moves, their bodies make a quick flash of blue light, a bit like a firefly of the sea. Scientists call this living light. A breaking wave shakes millions of them at once, and the whole wave burns blue for a moment.

では、なぜ光るのだろうか。この光は一種の警報なのだ。小さな捕食者がその中を泳ぐと、水が光り始め、もっと大きな捕食者にその場所を知らせてしまう。つまり小さな生き物たちは、自分を助けてくれる「危険な助っ人」を呼ぶために海を光らせているのだ。彼らにとっては命をつなぐための行動。だが真夜中の海岸に立つ人には、まるで海いっぱいに星が落ちてきたように見えるのだ。

Why do they do it? The flash is a kind of alarm. When a small hunter swims through them and the water starts to glow, bigger hunters can suddenly see where dinner is. So the little creatures light up the sea to call for dangerous help. For them it is survival. For anyone standing on the beach at midnight, it looks like the ocean is full of fallen stars.
