밤에 파랗게 빛나는 해변

어떤 해변은 어둠 속에서 빛나요. 조명 때문도, 달빛 때문도 아니에요. 파도가 모래에 부딪힐 때마다 바닷물 자체가 전기처럼 파랗게 빛나요. 물가를 따라 걸으면 자신의 발자국까지 뒤에서 파랗게 반짝여요. 한밤중에 이걸 보러 침대에서 끌어낼 만한 친구를 소환해 보세요.

Some beaches glow in the dark. Not from lamps, not from the moon. The water itself lights up, electric blue, every time a wave breaks on the sand. Walk along the edge and your own footprints flash blue behind you. Tag the friend you would drag out of bed at midnight to see this.

이 빛은 하나하나는 눈에 보이지도 않을 만큼 작은 수십억 마리의 바다 생물에게서 나와요. 주변 물이 움직이면 이 생물들의 몸이 순간적으로 파란빛을 내는데, 마치 바다의 반딧불이 같아요. 파도가 부서지면 수백만 마리가 한꺼번에 흔들리면서 파도 전체가 잠깐 파랗게 타올라요.

The light comes from billions of tiny sea creatures, far too small to see one by one. When the water around them moves, their bodies make a quick flash of blue light, a bit like a firefly of the sea. Scientists call this living light. A breaking wave shakes millions of them at once, and the whole wave burns blue for a moment.

왜 이런 빛을 낼까요? 이 빛은 일종의 경보예요. 작은 포식자가 이 생물들 사이를 헤엄치며 물이 빛나기 시작하면, 더 큰 포식자가 저녁거리가 어디 있는지 단번에 알아채요. 그러니까 이 작은 생물들은 위험한 도움을 부르려고 바다를 밝히는 셈이에요. 그들에게는 생존의 문제지만, 한밤중 해변에 서 있는 사람에게는 마치 바다 가득 별똥별이 떨어진 것처럼 보여요.

Why do they do it? The flash is a kind of alarm. When a small hunter swims through them and the water starts to glow, bigger hunters can suddenly see where dinner is. So the little creatures light up the sea to call for dangerous help. For them it is survival. For anyone standing on the beach at midnight, it looks like the ocean is full of fallen stars.
