C'è un hotel dove ti addormenti in un paese e ti svegli in un altro. Si chiama treno notturno, e l'Europa ne è piena. Sali la sera in una grande stazione, trovi la tua cabina minuscola con il letto pieghevole e la piccola scala, e verso mezzanotte il binario scivola via dietro di te. Sfida un amico a provarlo con te invece di un volo.
Immagina la scena. Le tue scarpe sono sotto il letto, il biglietto infilato nella tasca vicino al cuscino, e tutta la stanza dondola dolcemente come una barca. Dallo spiraglio della tenda afferri pezzi di notte, una fattoria illuminata, il nome di una stazione che passa troppo veloce per leggerlo, le spalle nere delle montagne. A un certo punto un confine passa sotto di te, e tu lo dormi tutto.
Al mattino un addetto bussa con caffè e panini caldi, e tu alzi la tendina su un mondo completamente nuovo. Neve sulle cime, nebbia nelle valli, mucche che chiaramente non hanno mai avuto fretta. Sei andato a letto in una capitale e ti sei svegliato dentro una cartolina delle Alpi. Niente aeroporto, niente coda, niente bagagli persi. Solo un letto con un ottimo motore.
