In Tokyo, the trains stop around midnight. Tomas learns this five minutes too late, and discovers where the city sleeps when it misses the way home.

Tomas guardò il suo telefono e sentì lo stomaco stringersi. Erano le dodici e dieci del mattino, e i cancelli della stazione stavano chiudendo. A Tokyo, i treni non circolano tutta la notte. L'ultimo treno sulla maggior parte delle linee parte intorno a mezzanotte, e tutti in città conoscono l'orario esatto del loro. Tomas, che era nel paese da quattro giorni, non lo sapeva.
Un taxi per attraversare la città sarebbe costato più della sua camera d'albergo. Un addetto della stazione vide la sua espressione e indicò la strada. Lì, tra un konbini e un negozio di ramen, brillava l'insegna di un capsule hotel. Tomas pagò a una macchina, prese una chiave per l'armadietto e dormì in una capsula di plastica pulita delle dimensioni di un letto singolo, in una stanza tranquilla piena di altre persone che avevano anche loro perso il treno.
La mattina dopo comprò un caffè da un distributore automatico e prese il primo treno per tornare a casa, fresco e leggermente orgoglioso. Ora controlla una cosa prima di uscire la sera in Giappone: non il menu, non la mappa, ma l'orario dell'ultimo treno.
