Number Forty-Seven

Carla cuts her hand. She washes dishes at home. She goes to the clinic. She gets a number: forty-seven.

Carla kaleczy sobie rękę. Myje naczynia w domu. Idzie do przychodni. Dostaje numer: czterdzieści siedem.

The screen shows thirty-one. The room is full. A man reads a magazine. A father holds a baby. A teenager looks at his phone.

Ekran pokazuje trzydzieści jeden. Sala jest pełna. Mężczyzna czyta czasopismo. Ojciec trzyma dziecko. Nastolatek patrzy w telefon.

The numbers change slowly: thirty-two, thirty-three, thirty-six. They do not go in order. Carla waits.

Numery zmieniają się powoli: trzydzieści dwa, trzydzieści trzy, trzydzieści sześć. Nie idą po kolei. Carla czeka.

After one hour, the screen shows forty-seven. Carla goes in. The doctor looks at her hand. "It is small," he says. "Clean it two times a day."

Po godzinie ekran pokazuje czterdzieści siedem. Carla wchodzi. Lekarz patrzy na jej rękę. "To niewielka rana," mówi. "Proszę ją czyścić dwa razy dziennie."

Carla leaves. The room is almost empty. The teenager is gone. The baby is awake.

Carla wychodzi. Sala jest prawie pusta. Nastolatka już nie ma. Dziecko nie śpi.
