Number Forty-Seven

Carla cuts her hand. She washes dishes at home. She goes to the clinic. She gets a number: forty-seven.

The screen shows thirty-one. The room is full. A man reads a magazine. A father holds a baby. A teenager looks at his phone.

화면에는 서른한 번이 보여요. 방은 사람으로 가득해요. 한 남자가 잡지를 읽어요. 한 아버지가 아기를 안고 있어요. 한 십대가 휴대폰을 봐요.

The numbers change slowly: thirty-two, thirty-three, thirty-six. They do not go in order. Carla waits.

번호는 천천히 바뀌어요: 서른두 번, 서른세 번, 서른여섯 번. 순서대로 나오지 않아요. 카를라는 기다려요.

After one hour, the screen shows forty-seven. Carla goes in. The doctor looks at her hand. "It is small," he says. "Clean it two times a day."

한 시간 후, 화면에 마흔일곱 번이 나와요. 카를라는 들어가요. 의사가 그녀의 손을 봐요. "작은 상처예요." 그가 말해요. "하루에 두 번 씻으세요."

Carla leaves. The room is almost empty. The teenager is gone. The baby is awake.
